Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing dental issues, maintaining overall health, freshening breath, preserving teeth, enhancing appearance, saving costs, and improving quality of life.

If you protect your oral health with good oral hygiene practices (brushing and flossing), the odds are in your favor you can keep your teeth for a lifetime.

Brush Your Teeth

To ensure effective brushing, it's crucial to brush your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes each time, using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Start by angling the brush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line and using gentle, circular motions to clean the outer and inner surfaces of all teeth. Don't forget to brush the chewing surfaces and the back of your teeth as well. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas and the gum line where plaque tends to accumulate. Additionally, remember to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath. Avoid aggressive brushing, as it can damage tooth enamel and irritate gums. Lastly, replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. Consistent, thorough brushing along with regular dental check-ups will help maintain optimal oral health.

Cleaning Between Your Teeth

Flossing is an essential part of a complete oral hygiene routine, as it helps remove plaque and food particles from areas between teeth and below the gumline where your toothbrush can't reach. To floss effectively, use about 45cm of dental floss and wind most of it around your middle fingers, leaving about 5cm for cleaning. Grip the floss between the thumb and index finger of each hand. Gently glide the floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion, curving it around each tooth in a C-shape and making sure to reach below the gumline. Be careful not to snap the floss, as it may injure your gums. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria. Aim to floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime, to maintain optimal oral health and prevent gum disease and cavities.
